Here is a little I came up with that I try to live by everyday I entitled it Who Are We?
Who are we?
We are the protectors of the past.
Who are we ?
We are the keepers of the future.
Who are we?
We are the present!
Basically this means we are to honor and take care of our elderly. We are train and teach are youth of today because they are our future. We are the present and it is our responsibility to see to this.
While typing this post I started to remember this little boy in my class one year. I will call him Tom ( I am not going to give his real name for security reason) this little bot reminded me in just a few minutes why I want to be a teacher. Tom was a child who always had a smile and ready to help however when it came down to learning to write his name he just got so frustrated because he just could not get the his little hand to hold the pencil just right. I worked with him and one day he came into the classroom and told me he wrote his name. I looked at him and started to smile. I said I needed some help to write his name and could he help me. Tom gave me this huge smile and said, " Aww, Mrs. Elaine I can do that!" Tom got a pencil and paper and started to write his name. I could not believe it. I gave him the best hug and kiss on the head and that is all it took. Tom could not wait to help the other students learn to write. To this day I get a card every year that he has written.

Elaine,
ReplyDeleteI loved the story about Tom and how he now writes you a letter every year. I had a similar experience with a little girl in my preschool class, she was having a difficult time with pronouncing certain letters while going through association flashcards. I ended up going online and researching helpful tips and tricks in which I then worked with her during the day on. Her parents were actually the ones who came to me a few weeks later to ask what had changed as they were blown away by the fullness of her speech. When I presented them with the research I had done on how to help, they immediately went home and began to work with her on it as well.
It has been three months since this happened and she is one of the most talkative students I have with the widest vocabulary. It is amazing what time and patience can have in the field of education, especially with Early Childhood. It sounds like you are a wonderful educator!

Elaine,
ReplyDeleteI can tell you have a passion for early childhood just by the pure joy and excitement with which you speak of your work with Tom! I think being able to help children learn how to do things independently is a great responsibility we have. We set the tone for the attitudes they will have about learning and about "trying their very best". That is our mantra in our classroom. No matter how hard something may seem, we always try our very best and Miss Angie (I) will never give them something that I do not think they can do :) Great post!
