Quotes from T. Berry Brazelton that still ring
true today.
“Parents don't
make mistakes because they don't care, but because they care so deeply.”
(I put the last one in for all of us that have well-meaning
parents who do not realize that they had to learn how to be parents just as we
do.)

How about some great insight from Amy Santos, Ph.D?
From experience, we know that many parents sense something different about their children very early on and yet wait or asked to wait before getting any help. From our standpoint, identifying and addressing these issues early can lead to better outcomes. The more we know what to look for in young children as they grow, the sooner we can provide help, the better their chances for succeeding in school and later in life.
When asked about her work and raising her daughter
she had these thoughts to share:
I know that I am the kind of parent that I
am today because of what I do at work and what I learn from research. I use
what I know from my teaching and research in parenting Lin.

I believing teaching is a
passion that we have at an early age but may not fully discover until we are
much older. I believe that Louise Derman Sparks, Professor Emeritus at Pacific
Oak College, said it best, “I have a built in passion that it was important to
make a real contribution to the world and to fix the injustices in the world
and wanted to do it through teaching. (Laureate Education, Inc. (2010)”
“Parents don't make mistakes because they don't care, but because they care so deeply.”
ReplyDelete“Grandparents who want to be truly helpful will do well to keep their mouths shut and their opinions to themselves until these are requested.” Those words are in my life. I raised my grand children up to the age of 12,10,08.Now it is hard for me to keep quiet when it comes to the decisions my daughter makes with her children now that she has them back. She cares for the children but she had to get her life together in order to take care of the children.Words of Wisdom great post.
Hi Elaine!
ReplyDeleteYou have chosen some great inspirational and motivational quotes for our colleagues and I. The quote that stood out to me the most was "I have a built in passion that it was important to make a real contribution to the world and to fix the injustices in the world and wanted to do it through teaching" by Sparks. As educators, we try to do the best we can to make sure our children are successful so that they can contribute to a better world themselves. As for myself, sometimes I believe I have to play the role as super-woman when it comes to my students. I feel as though, we are accountable for the young children actions and their accomplishments. Great blog by the way! :)
Hi Elaine,
ReplyDeleteso to be honest I have mixed feelings about the quotes you chose to share. I love the quote about built in passion, I feel that we have put ourselves into a rewarding and challenging field because of our built in passion and without it we would burn out. Your quote from Amy Santos about parents is a testament to the relationships and trust we have to build with parents. As a parent with two of my three children having diagnosis I know how hard the process can be and for most parents it is not denial but rather a lack of education on the matter and fear. It is up to us to help parents through the process. I have mixed feelings on Brazelton's words of wisdom. On one hand I respect that parents make mistakes that is how we learn, how we have always learned from childhood on through life but I can not agree that grandparents should be kept quite. They are sharing what they have learned so we don't make the same mistakes, instead we can make different ones and find a new way to do things, which we will than share when we are grandparents.
Your first quote about parents making mistakes is a good one. We as parents want the best for our children and sometimes we think we know what is best. The quote about grandparents keeping quiet is another story. I believe grandparents can offer wisdom to certain situations that they may have experienced before but I do agree that not all time their advice is welcomed. Things are constantly changing so that sometimes what a grandparent believed was right research may have proved it to be wrong.

ReplyDeleteThe quote that stand out to me is about the Grandparents, I never keep my mouth close if anyone knows me will say that. I am so involved in my grandkids life, no way I kept my opinion to myself. The way these kids are being raise these days parents need all the help they can to raise our children, I stand behind this quote It's take a Village to Raise a Child. I am from the old school, some parents still need that push while raising our grandkids. I remember when I was little girl and I missed having my grandma around, but my granddad was right there with tough love.
